and that news is the frantic rush tonight in the east bay as crews dig their way to try to free a man stuck for hours in a drainage pipe. good evening. i'm larry beil. >> and i'm ama dates. dan and carolyn have the night off. the rescue effort is going on right now on fitzgerald drive in pinole. alan wang is live on the scene with the latest. >> ama, we are here at the best buy in pinole, and that guy is still stuck in the drainpipe about 20 yards up the hill behind me. firefighters from pinole and the surrounding area are using shovels to dig up the pipes and possibly using heavy machinery to break into it. it started around 8:00 tonight when a customer here at the best buy in pinole heard the faint voice of a man calling for help. at first they couldn't figure out where it was coming from. and then they tracked it to a storm drain. the security guard at best buy said the man was sleeping in the pipe which is slanted at a

50 degree angle, and somehow he sliped so far down they could only hear him faintly calling for help. jay been able to make physical and verbal contact with him. we tried to lasso his hands, but he is tightly in there. we are excavating the drainpipe right now. i have resources from pinole public works to determine if we need to breakthrough the drainpipe itself and how we are going to be able to do that and protect his safety. >> reporter: firefighters say the man appears to be about 30 years old, and he is stuck in a 14-inch drainage pipe, but they don't know how long he has been in there. this could take a longtime because the fire department is calling in the public works department to use heavy machinery to break up that pipe after they dig through the dirt to get to it. we will stay on it, and we will come back to you if they dig him up and get him out of there. alan wang reporting live at

the best buy in pinole, abc7 news. thank you. we are learning more about a deadly crash that killed two people near palo alto. it happened as the family was heading home on highway 101 apparently after early-morning black friday shopping: thomas is live with the latest. >> four young women ages 12 to 24 and their parents were coming home from a black friday shopping trip when the accident happened. the 24-year-old died at the scene. a mother and daughter were brought to stanford medical center in serious condition. a relative told us this daughter has died of her injuries. >> they wanted to go shopping for black friday. >> reporter: he is a friend of the family who was in this horrific accident on 101 on friday morning. the mother and daughters were coming back from a shopping trip in gilroy at 6:45 a.m. the chp said the gold lexus they were in rear-ended a chp

patrol car that pulled over on the shoulder to help another vehicle near the palo alto-embarcadero exit. the suv flipped over scattering gifts all over the roadway. while the suv was turning, two people were ejected. one of the parties succumbed to the injuries at the scene. >> reporter: one of the daughters, a 24-year-old died at the scene. an uncle told abc7 that she had been shopping for her wedding in india next month. the other daughter who was brought to stanford also died. >> they wanted to go to india for marriage, the first one. >> reporter: she passed away? >> she passed away. later on the second one passed away. >> it was very shocking to me. at our house we got a bunch of calls. >> reporter: four of the family members were wearing seatbelts at the time according to the chp. the two daughters who died were not. sky 7hd was over the massive traffic jam on highway 101. traffic was snarled for six hours while officers

investigated the crash. a seven-minute trip to work took him about 40 minutes. >> getting to my location the traffic was a nightmare. >> reporter: the family is living a nightmare. the mother is here in serious condition. the father and other daughters are at valley medical center in san jose, and we don't know their condition. the chp officer was not seriously injured, and this accident is under investigation. abc news. roman, abc news. >> thank you, thomas. a family in the south bay is preparing to bury their youngest son. he was san jose's 42nd homicide. he was the innocent victim of one of the city's most violent crime spree. he was killed outside a 7-eleven in an attempted carjacking. services will be held at the darling fisher memorial chapel in campbell tomorrow morning at 10:00. a pilot has died after crashing his small plane in

calaveras county. it went down a mile south of the calaveras county airport. this is the scene near the crash near san andre yeses. the plane is described as an experimental aircraft. the pilot was the only one on board, and his identity has not been released. still no word on what caused the accident. 80s icon larry hagman has died. he is probably best known as the oil baron jr ewing on "dallas." he recently revised his role on a reboot for cable. according to a newspaper linda gray and patrick duffy were at his bedside when he passed away late this afternoon. he died of cancer and was 81 years old. an explosion that rocked springfield, massachusetts was caught on camera. look at this video. the blast leveled a bar and damaged 12 buildings nearby. it was fueled by a gas leak. nobody died, but 18 people suffered nonlife-threatening injuries. half of them were firefighters.

san francisco's union square for tonight's annual tree lighting ceremony. th is the 23rd straight year for the macy's sponsored tree lighting. 33,000 lights and 1100 ornaments covered the 83-foot tree. at california's great america in santa clara, the second annual global winter wonderland is under way. lights, plan -- lanterns and the lighting of the spectacular display. this is the only u.s. stop for the wonderland that features face painters, jugulars, fire dancers and fire eaters. love the fire eaters. still to come, chaos across the country as millions turned out to get in on the black friday deals. we'll show you some of the biggest spots. >> and how you can shop and help out your community this weekend. >> and along with on-line shopping comes another problem, package theft. what you need to know to make sure your on-line purchases arrive at their destination.

breaking news out of pinole. this is a live picture as crews frantically try to dig out a man who has been stuck in a drainage pipe. he has been stuck since 8:00 tonight. officials tell abc news that he was sleeping in the pipe and got wedged inside somehow. they continue to dig around the pipe which is 14 inches wide. they plan to break the pipe to free him. that's what they hope anyway. we'll continue to follow the story story and bring you the latest on abc news tomorrow morning. moving to black friday.

a mad house across the nation as black friday shoppers crowded into stores for big savings. is it began last night and carried into the afternoon. sky 7hd caught the scene outside the packed mall as crowds continued to grow around the bay area. >> and the black friday deals lead to shoppers gone wild today. there was some violence around the country from california to chicago. tempers flaring as millions flocked to the stores. in roseville, check out the video taken just after midnight. this was a wild scene with punches thrown left and right between two groups of shoppers. police officers broke up that fight. and there was a mob scene at a wal-mart in chicago. they were rushing in and grabbing boxes all over the place. the spectacle was captured by store employees who stepped back from the crowd with their own safety. plus, pushing, shoving and screaming at a victoria's secret as they opened their

doors in the morning. employees and mall security was overwhelmed by those looking to get first dibs on the black friday deals. >> this year small stores hope they will skip the big box stores and head their way. it is called small business saturday. it is evident in many businesses across the east bay. here in albany the stores promote the fact they are local. it is the hook shop owners will bring in customers even though they can't offer deep discounts. one shopper said it is the commitment to the community that counts. >> they support our schools by offering discounts and helping with auctions and all kinds of other events that happen in our town. we are giving back to them. >> this is a third year for small business saturday. a survey shows 67% of those familiar with the initiative are planning to participate. with the next big shopping day cyber monday a few days away shipping companies are now getting ready for their busy season. fed ex predicts this will be

the busiest in company history and the busiest day is monday december 10th. fed ex is expecting to deliver 19 million packages in that one day alone. that's 10% more than last year and double the volume it handles on an average day. with increased deliveries comes increase theft. look at this. thanks to lots of mediage, fremh coverage, fremont police have new leads that could help identify a woman who stole a package from this home in the middle of the day. the whole thing was caught on surveillance video. thieves operate quickly following the delivery trucks and making their move as soon as the driver leaves. ups offers these tips to prevent from becoming a victim. sign up for the delivery notification. define a delivery window and choose a vocation and if possible sign up for a signature required service. let's get to what looks like a fantastic forecast. >> a beautiful week end and we are moving into it right now. doppler 7hd is showing a cloud free sky over the bay area we

have had over the last couple days. that will continue into tomorrow. sunny and mild and even milder for today. we will see gradual cuing starting on sunday, but it will be a pleasant day on sunday. rainy pattern on wednesday, and it carries us into next weekend. overnight, under mainly clear conditions, we will see patches of fog in the interior valleys. chillier with lows dropping into the upper 30s, santa rosa and napa. lows in the 40s in most other bay area locations. and to the satellite-radar, a large ridge of high pressure is the controlling feature. the storm track the jet stream is flowing to the north as are all weather dister wednesdays well to the north. the clear skies for the next few days will start our forecast animation at 11:00. notice how the high pressure holds on and gives us another sunny and mild day. the high pressure ridge holds on and fog will return tomorrow night into sunday morning. and that will bring temperatures down a little bit, so it will be cooler in

most areas on sunday by a few degrees, but mainly sunny and pleasant day. on we go as we skip ahead to the animation. notice how overnight tuesday into wednesday we get rain and then more rain coming in on thursday of next week. it is followed by more rain on friday. three consecutive days at least and possibly right into the weekend. we will see this rainy, soggy pattern. finally the rainy season begins to look like the rainy season. but not tomorrow. sunny skies tomorrow and mild in the south bay with high temperatures mainly in the low 70s. highs of 71 in san jose and cupertino. and on the peninsula, look for highs ranging from the upper 60s to right around 70. 70 in brentwood and palo alto. midto upper 60s on the coast at pacifica and half moon bay. downtown san francisco will see a high of 68 and 66 in the sunset district. north bay highs 72 in santa rosa and calistoga. 72 in oakland and castro valley and fremont.
